The BARIATRIC SORRENTO™ has been designed to accommodate those with increased body weight and physical size. Seating for bariatric clients should take into consideration the weight of the client, the body proportions, physical dimensions, range of moment, mobility and transfers. The needs of the caregiver should also be incorporated into the design of the chair.

The BARIATRIC SORRENTO™ is created and built with strength and durability at the forefront of design and will support users up to a 45 stone weight limit.

With its adaptability and effortless adjustment the BARIATRIC SORRENTO™ can be adjusted to suit the changing needs of a user or readjusted to suit the needs of a new user meaning their comfort, posture and pressure management remain un-compromised. With that in mind, the Bariatric lends itself easily to multi-user environments. Removable arms can assist with side transferring or sling application and removal.

Powered tilt in space and back angle recline can be used to improve posture, comfort and to redistribute pressure. This can also be converted to include forward tilt for rehabilitation or in self transferring situations. The adjustable back and recline will accommodate users with reduced hip flexion and when used in combination with tilt in space can prevent sliding from the chair. The features are controlled by powered adjustment which facilitates effortless adjustment by the client or carer.

Obesity is now recognised as a worldwide epidemic. In 2010, 42% of men and 32% of women in the UK were classed as overweight (1). The government project that by 2050 60% of men and 50% of women could be clinically obese (2).

In the past 20 years there has been an increasing number of bariatric clients which presents a significant challenge to healthcare providers who must ensure they provide care and equipment which is safe for both clients and staff. As designers and manufacturers we have evolved with this changing need and created seating which would be comfortable, supportive and safe for bariatric clients.

Factors to consider in bariatric seating; • Reduced range of motion due to mass of body parts   • Altered centre of gravity   • Reduced mobility and reduced ability to stand transfer   • Breathing difficulties   • Bulbous gluteal region (excess buttock tissue) which reduces the ability to make contact with the seat back.   • Impaired moving and handling   • Increased risk of pressure ulcers   • Slower and impaired wound healing

These are just some of the challenges that carers and health professionals will face in the management of bariatric clients. The BARIATRIC SORRENTO™ has been designed with the complex needs of bariatric clients and their carers in mind and designed to improve comfort, posture, pressure management and moving and handling for bariatric clients.
